Managed connectivity

A link of their own for the equipment you maintain: installed, run and monitored by us, and kept separate from the site’s own network.

Equipment that needs remote maintenance is often in the least convenient part of a site's network: a plant room, a production hall or a clinical area whose network belongs to someone else and is changed without notice. Managed connectivity gives that equipment a link of its own, separate from the site's office network, that we install, run and answer for.

What is included

  • A site router supplied, configured and managed by us, with the equipment on its own segment.
  • A primary link: a fixed line where the site can provide one, or 4G or 5G using roaming SIMs that select the strongest available network.
  • A backup link where the site's risk requires one, switching over automatically.
  • An encrypted tunnel from the site router to our access gateways in the United Kingdom or North America.
  • Monitoring of the link and the router at all hours, and fault handling by our service desk.

Working with site IT teams

Most sites will only allow new equipment on their network if they can see what it does. We provide each site's IT team with a short technical statement for their records: what is installed, what it connects to, which ports are used and how it is secured. Where a site prefers us to use its own network instead of a separate link, our router connects outbound only and needs no inbound rules.

Technical summary

Managed connectivity: technical summary
Site routerIndustrial-grade router, DIN-rail or desk mount, 12–48 V DC or mains; four Ethernet ports; managed by us
Primary linkFixed line from 20 Mbit/s, or 4G/5G with multi-network roaming SIMs
Backup link4G/5G, automatic failover within 60 seconds
TunnelIPsec (IKEv2, AES-256-GCM) to two gateways in the chosen region
SegmentationEquipment on its own VLAN; no routing to the site network unless agreed in writing
AddressingCustomer addressing preserved where possible; NAT at the gateway otherwise
MonitoringLink state, latency, packet loss and signal strength every 60 seconds
InstallationBy our field engineers or the site’s own contractor, with remote commissioning by us

Service levels

Availability targets depend on the links installed: 99.5% monthly for a single cellular link, 99.9% for a fixed line with cellular backup. Targets exclude planned maintenance announced in line with our terms. Faults are handled under the priorities set out on our support page.
